Everything You Need to Know About Employee Advocacy Employee advocacy is exactly as it sounds: its all about getting employees to be advocates for their own employers on social media. It runs on the straight from the horses mouth principle, whereby employees share favourable content that paints their organisation in a really positive way. The point? To market a company by engaging its people in a social way, so as to create and project a positive culture. How does it actually work though, and what are the dos and donts? To get the lowdown I speak to Glenn Gaudet, Founder and President of GaggleAMP to find out all about it. Listen to the interview below, keep reading for a summary and dont forget to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast. What would you say is the main challenge that employee advocacy addresses? Well, certainly there is the aspect of the online marketing, and really getting the amplification impact of having lots of people who already have an affinity for your organisation, your employees, to be able to easily share content thats being put out by the company. But theres also the engagement aspect of it, which really, the more engaged your employees are, the more it impacts your culture. So you have this two-sided effect. One is certainly from the marketing, which usually leads to sales, and on the other side you have engagement, which really helps drive culture. So its a really powerful combination of bringing people together to be part of an overall strategy that impacts the sales, the marketing, and the culture. Is employee advocacy better suited for large companies? It depends on what your goals are. So obviously for a very large company, its great because you can tap into thousands or tens of thousands of employees. I remember when we, going back a few years, we had a small company come on, they had 17 employees. And this is what they told us, over a three-month period, they tripled their web traffic, they quadrupled their lead flow by getting the employees that were on our platform to just use easily share content. So even in a small situation, it doesnt take a lot of people to have big impact. Youre going to have some employees that are loud on social, theyre out there all the time, they are part of it, they get it. And then, on the other end of the spectrum, youre going to have employees that arent really sure about what to do and what to say on social. When youve got that full range, you need to be able to satisfy the needs of both ends, plus everyone in the middle. Do employees really want to share content about their company with friends and family on Facebook? Again, you have to think about this as a strategy, a broader strategy, a communication strategy, and its not about just getting your product out there all the time. In fact, we have customers, we have some B2C brands that you would know, and when you look at the kinds of content that they are asking their employees to share, whether it be on Facebook or somewhere else, theyre not talking about the products per se, but a lot of times, they are talking about the impact that they may be having in the local community. And then, all of a sudden, you see employees who are really proud about sharing the same, Listen, Im part of an organisation thats having real impact. So, again, it depends on what your communication strategy is. What are you trying to get out there? What are you trying to have impact with? Because, in a broader sense, when you take this out of the realm of just, Im trying to get more leads for my product, what youre doing is youre impacting your brand. And how do you want to impact your brand with the right kinds of messages that are going out, whether it be from the corporate social assets, as well as the employee social assets? And you shouldnt expect that every employee is going to share everything you put out there for them. Thats not what this is all about. Its about giving them the choice so that you share the content that theyre comfortable with sharing. How can you make sure employees dont all share the same content at the same time? There are certain things that we do to help reduce that impact. But, at the end of the day, you also have to look at what the crossover is. So in other words, if you and I have exactly the same people in our contact list on LinkedIn, you might actually start seeing some of that because we might be connected to 100 people in the same company together and then we start seeing that. But the reality is, once you get outside that organisation, the people in the outside, theyre not connected to everyone in the organisation. So theyre not seeing the fact that maybe 100 people shared a message that was similar. People always look at it from the wrong perspective usually, when I hear that, is theyre not looking at it from the outside world, which is really the audience that youre trying to get. How do you measure return on investment of employee advocacy? One of the things that we do is we actually measure the ROI for our clients. And theres a number of different ways that you can measure. Some of the easy ways is, first of all, the message reach that you achieved. If you think about it, you put something out on your corporate Twitter account, whats the average lifespan of that? Its not very long. And, all of a sudden, now you have the ability to increase the reach, plus the chances of those people seeing the content, by people sharing this over a period of time. And thats the nice thing about this. This is not just, all of a sudden, blasted out to everyone. This is really about organically sharing content over a period of time so that it gets the maximum exposure. So if you think about it from that point of view, whats it going to have impact on? Well, youre going to see ROI, first of all from the reach. Thats one. Thats a no-brainer. Youre going to see click-throughs, assuming youre putting links in the content that comes back to y our website. And then from the links, what happens? Youre driving people to the website. Now theyre downloading forms and youre capturing leads. So theres a direct correlation to the amount of leads that youre getting. And then because what our stuff does is it allows you to actually get that close-loop marketing. So we work with marketing automation tools so that we can do lead-source passing to the marketing automation tool. The marketing automation tool passes that to the CRM. Next thing you know, you know exactly from what message that this particular deal came in on. So if you close the deal for $5,000, for $20,000, you know exactly where that came from now. So its really powerful. Even though youre getting all these people to share, there is that data that comes in with it, which is a really big piece of this. Edinburgh University to Charge £36,000 - Most Expensive in Britain Edinburgh University has announced that it will charge non-Scottish UK students £36,000 for a degree. The National Union of Students Scotland said the new £9,000 annual fee for all courses, with four-year degrees as standard, makes Edinburgh the most expensive university in Britain. Heriot Watt and Aberdeen universities have also announced £9,000-a-year fees for non-Scots, but unlike Edinburgh, they are capping fees at £27,000. According to the Guardian (online) Edinburgh defended its decision by saying it would offset its fees with generous £6.7m-a-year bursaries for its non-Scottish undergraduates. It will be heavily funded by the higher fees, and be worth up to £7,000 a year per student. Professor Mary Bownes, the universitys Vice Chancellor for external engagement, said: The increase in the fee is necessary as we will no longer receive government funding for the rest of the UK domiciled students. These students will be studying at one of the worlds top teaching and research institutions, regularly ranked amongst the leading universities in the world. About 22,500 rest of the UK students go to Scottish universities each year, currently paying £1,820 a year in fees, but the new fees were authorised by the Scottish government earlier this year. Scottish university principals and Scottish ministers feared that there would be a surge in fee refugees heading north to avoid the £9,000-a-year fees for English universities, authorised by the UK government. Heriot Watt and Aberdeen have also announced new and enhanced bursaries for poorer students from outside Scotland, to offset the new charges, but the top-rate fees were denounced by the National Union of Students Scotland as terrible news. Referring to Edinburghs decision, Graeme Kirkpatrick, the Unions depute president, said: A £36,000 degree is both staggering and ridiculous. The average cost to study at Oxford and Cambridge is around £25,000 in fees, which while still eye-wateringly large, pales in comparison with this. And thats before you add additional debt for the extra year of living costs for the four-year degree in Scotland. This is nothing less than cashing in on students from the rest of the UK, and giving the signal that Edinburgh University is more interested in the money you can bring, as opposed to your academic ability. The reputational damage this could do, not only to Edinburgh, but to the whole of Scottish higher education, should not be underestimated. Theres clearly a race to the top happening here in terms of setting fees. Its a depressing day when a university feels its more likely to be judged on the price tag it chooses, rather than the quality of the education it provides. Tuition fees put off the poorest students and make university more about your bank balance than your ability. Most university courses in Scotland last four years, against three elsewhere in the UK, because many courses start with a general foundation year before students begin specialising fully. That would have allowed Scottish colleges to set fees as high as £36,000 for a full four-year degree, much higher than their English counterparts, but Scottish universities believe most English students with strong A-level grades will be able to bypass the foundation year and begin their courses in second year. Some students will face higher fees. Students doing Medicine at Aberdeen and Edinburgh will still be charged £9,000 a year for the full five year course, as in England. Heriot Watt said students on enhanced five-year courses in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Maths would be charged £9,000 for four years. The Scottish universities argue the decision to cap fees for mainstream subjects at £27,000 will allow them to compete directly with English colleges. Professor Steve Chapman, the principle at Heriot Watt, defended the new fees, which will affect about 225 non-Scottish students there each year. He said his universitys degrees were a positive investment in future employment. Over 92% of our graduates are in work or further study within six months of graduation, with approximately three quarters of those going straight into graduate level jobs. Heriot Watt also expects that a third of its student from the rest of the UK will be able to get bursaries to help the new fees. Scottish students will not be charged the new £9,000 a year fees because of an anomaly in European Union laws, which is expected to be challenged in court by several English students and the Birmingham-based law firm Public Interest Law. Since the Scottish government does not charge its residents university fees, all other non-UK students are also entitled to free tuition under EU laws. How to Move Abroad and Take Your Job With You - Banking - Career Pivot How to Move Abroad â" Banking By Neldahinojosa â" Own work, GFDL, Link Now that we have permanently moved to Mexico, banking has become a necessity of life. We need money to live on, and up until now, all of the money resides in institutions in the U.S. I have been chronicling ourexperiences in this blog and on the Repurpose Your Career podcast. I have been discussing our experiences on the podcast and writing about the business side of the move here on the blog. There are a variety of ways to get access to your money, but there are 3 factors that are consistent across all of the methods of accessing banking: Transfer time Fees Exchange rate Your options for accessing money in the U.S. are as follows: Use a local ATM to withdraw money from your U.S. bank. Open a Mexican bank account and wire transfer money from your US bank to your Mexican bank. Withdraw money from the bank via a teller (yes, they still exist). Access your money via an ATM. Access to US Banking via Mexican ATM Before you leave the US you should tell your credit card providers and the bank that you will be in Mexico. Most will put a comment in your credit file which is only good for 3 months. When you access an ATM the first time, find one that will let you choose the language. If you are in smaller markets, they will only present the menu options in Spanish. The first time I went to withdraw money it asked in Spanish how much I wanted to withdraw using the symbol â$â which I assumed meant in US dollars. I entered 100 and I receive 100 Mexican pesos or the equivalent of 20 US dollars, not the amount of Mexican pesos that was equivalent of 100 US dollars. DUH! In Mexico, the symbol â$â represents Mexican pesos. My first lesson in Mexican banking. If you have to use a machine with Spanish only menus, use Google Translate. Use the camera option to translate the ATM menu. When you withdraw from an ATM, you have immediate access to your money, but the amount of money you can withdraw is limited by the bank that owns the ATM and your bank in the US. The transfer time is immediate. Listen to the most recent episode ATM Fees ATM fees vary a lot from bank to bank, and then there are the fees your bank charges. These fees are on a per transaction basis, therefore, the more money you withdraw at a time the less expensive the fees are. For example, there is one bank that allows me to withdraw a maximum of 7000 Mexican pesos at a time and charges just over 80 pesos in fees. Another bank allows me to withdraw a maximum of 5000 Mexican pesos at a time and charges just over 30 pesos in fees. You would think the 2nd bank would be a better deal but it is not because the exchange rate I get from the 1st bank is so much better. My credit union charges me $1.50 (US) to withdraw from an ATM that is not part of their network. I may be paying $5-7 (US) every time I use an ATM in Mexico to access banking in the US. The exception to this isCharles Schwab money market accounts, which allow for unlimited withdraws from international ATMâs and they refund all transaction fees. This is very popular but there is one caveat, you cannot have permanently left the US. Most people get around this by maintaining a US mailing address, which we have done. Establishing a Bank Account in Mexico You can establish a bank account in Mexico but it usually requires you have some form of resident visa, either temporary or permanent. Notice I said usuallybecause we were able to establish a bank account with just a tourist visa. This took some digging through several Facebook groups and then discussions with several well-established expats that know the ropes. My recommendation is you explore your options by speaking with established expats in the area where you plan to move. Once you have a bank account, you can wire transfer from your US bank to your Mexican bank when exchange rates are favorable. I will give you 3 examples on how you can wire transfer money but the speed, fees, and exchange rates will vary and sometimes a lot. Online and Mobile Banking When I established my bank account, I was not automatically given access to online banking, I had to ask for it. I was issued a token device. See image to the right. When I go to log in on the bankâs Internet banking webpage or on the mobile app, I am presented with an 8 digit code which I enter into the device and it returns an 8 digit code that I must enter into the web page or mobile app. This makes this cumbersome but very secure. I do not carry this device around, so using the mobile app when I am away from home is impossible. I do not know if all of the Mexican banks operate in this fashion. Transferring Money The first option is to do a wire transfer from your US bank to your Mexican bank. When I did this, I received instructions from my Mexican banker which I forwarded to my US bank. I was charged a US $30 fee and it took about 24 hours for the money to show up in my Mexican account. The exchange rate was good but not great and was determined by my Mexican bank. The second option is to use a PayPal owned service,Xoom. They offer transfers of money for a flat fee of US $4.99 and it typically takes 3 days. They cannot transfer money to just any bank and they do not support the bank I am using. In addition, the exchange is much lower and therefore, I have not used this service. The third option is to use Transferwise. They charge a flat fee of US $4.99 plus an ACH fee that is in proportion to the size of the wire transfer. The exchange rates are superior to the first two options. The downside is it takes about a week to receive the funds. The exchange rate is superior to anything else I have seen and makes up for the higher fees. Our Banking Plans We have opened up a bank account at Intercam Banco and now have a Visa debit card. I am limited to withdrawing 5000 Mexican pesos per day from an ATM and the maximum online purchase, I think, is 1500 Mexican pesos. I say âI thinkâ because I have not tried this yet and I do not remember what I was told about the limit. I will be using Transferwise to move money from my US banks to Intercam Banco. We currently have debit cards with 3 different banking institutions in the US. Why have 3 you may ask? If you lose a debit card and need to replace it, it can take a significant amount of time. You can cancel it quickly but getting a new card is an issue. Since most business establishments where we live do not take credit cards, it is a cash-based society. You must have back-up plans. Fortunately, having a local bank account is a big advantage. I will be exploring getting a Charles Schwab account as another way to reduce ATM fees. I pay my rent in cash each month and I was withdrawing the monies from my US banks over multiple days from the ATM machines. What a pain. Now I will be able to go to the bank and receive the funds from a bank teller and then walk over and pay my rent. The bank is only 2 blocks from our casita and the rental office is 4 blocks in the opposite direction. We have multiple credit cards with US banks that we will continue to use to make purchases in the US. For example, I pay for my storage unit in Austin on one credit card, and my wife pays for nutritional supplements on another that is shipped to a friends house. We will make another run to Austin in October and bring back what has been stored. In no way have I figured all of this out yet ⦠but I am getting there. What If I Dont Find the Right Career Considering a career change can be a very daunting process. Not only have I helped many clients through this transition, but Ive also gone through this myself. At times, a client will say to me, what if I donât uncover a career that is the right fit for me? The Value is the Insight That is a valid concern. There are no guarantees that an individual will discover that right career after a certain amount of coaching sessions. Even if he or she did find a great career fit, there is something much more valuable to be gained. So what will they gain? Clients who participate in our Explore and Discover sessions gain a deep level of understanding about themselves and unprecedented insight. Specifically, they learn: the areas they are interested in working in the skills that they possess and want to use what values are most important to them in a career how their personality, personal characteristics or behaviors fit into a career The Value is the Process Those clients uncover so much information about themselves and what is important to them! They also walk away with a process on how to evaluate jobs and careers against these personal aspects over the course of their life and career. Remember, even if you identify a career you want to pursue through the coaching process today, it is most likely not the last career you will have in your life. You will continue to evaluate your career and how you want it to evolve as you move forward. Understanding the tools and techniques necessary to evaluate your career can pay dividends well into your future. That ability is the real value in working with a career coach! Whats at Stake? Letâs look at it another way, a client might not want to go through the process to Explore and Discover new careers that would be a match for them. What is really at risk? They may: Stay in a career that feels dissatisfying to them on several aspects. Not experience personal or professional growth or development. Push back the process several years and lose out on an opportunity for more immediate and long-lasting career satisfaction. There are rarely any guarantees in life. You need to decide if it is worth it to evaluate yourself and your career and learn how to identify a career that may be a better fit for you. It is an investment that you make in yourself and for your future.
